Should I get an electric car? Five questions to ask yourself

What does an electric car cost?

Although electric cars have a higher initial purchase price, both the ownership tax and costs for electricity and maintenance are lower.

According to FDM, you can save 10,000 DKK a year by choosing an electric car over a gasoline car at the same price. An electric car priced at 400,000 DKK can cost the same in ownership as a gasoline car priced at 300,000 DKK.

Electric cars have fewer mechanical components than traditional cars. The brakes wear out less because electric cars regenerate electricity when braking.

However, they still need to be cleaned and lubricated regularly. But in general, service and maintenance costs will be lower for an electric car compared to a gasoline or diesel car.

When leasing, the leasing fee is often higher for electric cars, but the total cost of ownership (TCO) is either lower or equivalent to that of a gasoline car due to the lower operational costs of an electric car.

How much does charging cost?

The cost of charging an electric car can vary depending on charging locations and subscriptions, but it is cheaper to drive on electricity than on gasoline or diesel.

It is easier to predict gasoline prices than electricity prices, as electricity costs depend on several factors like driving needs and charging options. However, if you want to delve deeper into electricity prices, FDM has compared electricity and gasoline prices for 2024.

If you have previously driven many kilometers in your gasoline car, you can achieve significant savings by switching to an electric car with a subscription where you pay a fixed monthly amount, for example, with our partner Clever.

The more kilometers you drive in your electric car, the more economically advantageous it becomes compared to your previous gasoline car.

Do I have access to a charging box at home or at my workplace?

Today, charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly, and many cities offer charging options.

At the end of May 2024, there were 28.883 public charging points in Denmark, and this number is constantly increasing. Therefore, there is sufficient access to charging stations in most places in Denmark.

At NF Fleet, we offer a partnership with Clever, where you can have a charging box installed at home and access Denmark’s largest public charging network with the Clever One Business subscription.

How far do I drive?

One of the most important questions to ask yourself if you’re considering getting an electric car is how far you drive daily. Many new electric cars today have a range of 500 km, which most people find sufficient.

Most commuters can manage their daily trips with an electric car, so a long range is not a necessity. According to Statistics Denmark, 9 out of 10 Danes can handle their commute to and from work in an electric car.

If you regularly visit family on the other side of the Great Belt, it might be a good idea to consider the size of the electric car's battery, i.e., the number of kWh it can hold. The car’s battery determines whether the car can fast charge.

What type of car should I choose?

Modern electric cars come in many sizes and types, from small city cars to spacious SUVs, meaning there is likely a model that suits your needs.

Before choosing a car type, consider your driving habits, parking options, and luggage space requirements.

If you primarily drive in the city, a compact electric car may be ideal due to its maneuverability and ease of parking.

For longer commutes or family trips, a midsize sedan, station wagon, or SUV may be more suitable as they often offer greater range and more space for passengers and luggage.

Think about future needs as well: Is your family growing, or are you planning more long trips? In that case, it might be a good idea to choose a model with extra space and comfort.

By thoroughly evaluating all these factors, you can find the electric car that best meets your individual needs and preferences.
